Hey, remember our old friend Mothra  (モスラ)?  If you’re a Godzilla (ゴジラ) fan, you likely remember Mothra from this epic battle with super metal flame-wings Battra (バトラ).  If you’re anything like me, you’re a huge fan of Mothra.  I mean… she sprinkles friendship glitter on her foes and barrages them with lightning attacks to bend them towards her furry, loving will.  It doesn’t get much better than that.  Well!  On September 9th, 2014 they released the Blu-ray version of “Rebirth of Mothra I/II/III” which has been remastered!  Of course I got it and just viewed it today with my friends!

Rebirth_of_MothraAfter the events in Godzilla vs. Mothra (ゴジラvsモスラ) it’s understandable that Mothra needed to take a nice long rest.  I mean, it takes a lot of energy to save the world and protect mankind, especially when it’s against Godzilla AND Battra.  Mothra enjoys some well deserved rest after laying her egg.  Meanwhile Mr. Goto, one of our obligatory human characters,  is running his construction company while destroying the earth and its’ ecosystem.  In order to highlight this, one of the first scenes you see is a construction vehicle running over a nest of bird eggs!!!  This theme of humans vs. nature is present in many of the Toho movies, and especially pertains to Mothra as she is a guardian of the earth.  Well, as Mr. Goto is going about his business, he finds what looks to be a medallion in the mountainside and does what anyone would do…. he removes it from the stone and gives it to his daughter as a necklace.  Of course!  Well, little did he know that removing this medallion would break the seal holding Desghidora (Death-Ghidora デスギドラ) in his earthly prison!  Clearly, this is a job for Mothra to once again save humanity from itself.

The original movie was released in 1996, but has since been remastered for this Blu-ray release, and it is beautiful.  I am a sucker for practical effects, and you can see that this film threw in a little bit of CGI, but mostly used puppetry and tactile Kaiju, so it looks amazing.  This is the first time I am watching this movie, and honestly it was better than I thought it would be!  The overall pacing of the story moved along at a fast clip.  We had some human story, but not too much.  The twins were awesome, as always, and in this film we’re introduced to a mysterious new member of the same race, Belvera.

The Blu-ray itself doesn’t come with anything in the way of features as it just has the original trailer.  This is to be expected for some of the older releases anyhow.  The main attraction of this set is the great remastered quality.  There are both English and Japanese audio and subtitles.  I recommend using the ‘English 2′ subtitle track as the first track had a black text background and moved around a bunch.  The second track was the much more standard subtitle track.  So overall, if you’re a Mothra fan this Blu-ray is worth the buy, you can get it here:  Rebirth of Mothra / Rebirth of Mothra II / Rebirth of Mothra III – Vol [Blu-ray]

P.S. If you came here as a Mothra fan then you REALLY need to check out Team Kultzow where I got this super awesome Mothra Necklace!

I love Kevin Smith for many reasons.  He’s a compelling speaker, seems like an awesome Dad and husband, is from New Jersey, etc.  I’ve grown up watching, relating to, and laughing at his movies.  So, when he announced his retirement from making movies, it made me sad.  Not too sad though since I still had Comic Book Men, Smodcast, and live performances during which I could enjoy all that Kevin Smith shares with us.   So, when Kevin Smith started talking about this ridiculous idea for a movie, a horror movie, based on a man obsessed with Walrus’ it was an exciting time.  Despite getting out of the movie business, Smith knew that no one would ever make this movie.  He knew that if it was going to happen, he would have to do it himself.  So here it was, hope that shortly after his departure from film, he would be coming back to give us a movie that could only come from the depths of his own brain.

So, I went to see Tusk last night for its opening.  This movie delivered exactly what was promised, as highlighted by podcast audio in the end-credits of Kevin Smith brainstorming how Tusk would end.  If you go into this movie expecting your run-of-the-mill standard horror movie, you will be disappointed.  This is an absurd comedy horror, and should be viewed as such.

The shining star in this film was Michael Parks.  This is considering Johnny Depp’s awesomely obscured performance.  Parks engenders this charisma that makes you like him even when he’s being the largest creeper on the planet.  Few can master this like him.  The movie is worth seeing for his performance alone.  That being said, the rest of the cast was strong as well.  There was a bit of a conflict in my mind as I wanted to laugh at how ridiculous it all was, but the cast did not miss a beat.  The acting was taken seriously and performances delivered were great.

I would definitely recommend watching the movie.  It could quite easily be enjoyed at home, as the visual effects are not the main focus.  However, if you’re looking for a movie to check out this weekend and just have some fun with, Tusk is a great choice.

Feeling less than is a horrible sinking ship that is hard to get yourself out of.  Not only are you operating in a small sphere of day to day interaction, but now more than ever we’re exposed to society at instant light speeds via social media and news sites.  With these wonderful technological advances come the good, and the bad.  Not only are we subject to our own criticisms, but if you put yourself out there in any way, the whole world can now pile on.  Every decision scrutinized, every photo dissected, and all confidence undermined.  I find myself feeling bad about myself more and more because I see these women around me whom I consider beautiful, confident, and all around amazing getting knocked down by the internet truth anonymous justice squads.  If they can’t be above reproach, what hope do I have?

So, imagine my surprise at this  Buzzfeed post about Beyoncé photoshopping her thigh gap.  What!  Beyoncé is a beautiful and talented woman!  She manages to appear confident and sexy while still seeming approachable and fun.  Sure, I’ve never met her, but she puts herself out there, and I admire a lot of what she does.  At first I was saddened that Beyoncé was doing this.  Then I thought about this feeling I have, self-loathing and self-doubt, and I wondered to myself, does Beyoncé really go through the same thing?  Does she feel compelled to Photoshop herself because even she does not live outside the reach of unrealistic beauty standards on Instagram?  I mean.. how can you get more beautiful than this…

However, instead of taking a minute and thinking about how beautiful women such as Beyoncé feel this impetus to alter their images, and examining why this might be…. People are jumping to sleuth it out and post it screaming “GOTCHA!!! I CAUGHT YOU FEELING ASHAMED OF YOURSELF AND PHOTOSHOPPING YOUR IRRATIONAL SELF-PERCEIVED FLAWS TO FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOURSELF!!!” If it wasn’t that, it would be people pointing out cellulite or the slightest of imperfections saying “GOTCHA!! I CAUGHT YOU BEING HUMAN!”.

I think that moments like this should really give us pause to examine why our society is so obsessed with an unbelievable ideal that even the most adored among us fall victim to the weight. So maybe, instead of trying to Sherlock Holmes your way into internet popularity by calling someone out for just trying to post a picture that makes them feel good about themselves, we start embracing each other and not making people feel the need to do this?

I prefer to think that Beyoncé does not get embroiled in the cloud that is body hatred. I prefer to think that instead this is just some overzealous assistant who is supposed to just be posting the images color corrected for Beyoncé, but decided to make some more adjustments because of a warped ingrained view of society.

Makeup has never been one of my strongest suits, and I am still learning a lot about it.  While learning I’ve been posting some images, and people have expressed interest in knowing what I am using.  This baffles me, since I feel like I’m doing super easy and predictable stuff, but I figured I would try to share some information anyway!  Bright colors and strong eye liners are one of my most common combinations, so I figured I would start there.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
There’s nothing worse than getting those thick creased lines of eyeshadow, and it used to be a huge problem for me.  I finally decided to try a primer out, and I quite like this one.  I use it both as an eyelid primer and an under eye primer before putting on concealer to prevent absorption into fine lines.

Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeshadow Pencil
I love eyeshadow, especially when it is bright.  My main issue with shadow powder is that it’s hard to get precision, especially when putting it under the eyes and not having it wander from loose powder on the applicator.  This is why I LOVE LOVE LOVE this product.  It gives me the precision that I want, and the color is vibrant and lasts all day!!!

Benefit “They’re Real” Mascara
I have pretty good eyelashes.  I’ve tried a number of mascaras that have just made them look spidery or clumpy and was always disappointed.  This mascara really gives me a full look that I LOVE!

Bombshell onyx liquid liner
I love the idea of liquid liners, but I have a few issues with them.  One, the applicator brush is just not as intuitive as a pencil is.  Also, it tends to look a little leathery in its composition.  What I love about the “Be a Bombshell” product is that it’s got a matte look to it and you apply it from a pencil device that has the eyeliner in it.  No dipping or clumping on a brush. This is my favorite eye liner ever!  Now I just need to practice my wings a bit.

High Brow
I used to always put white eyeshadow right under my eyebrow to highlight the area, I loved the effect.  But sometimes when I’m doing a more subdued shadow the white was too out of place.  I found out about high brow from The Beauty Department and I LOVE it!

So, earlier on Facebook a link to “31 Questions That Will Change Your Life” was shared.  Upon seeing it I was immediately reminded of a young Q answering surveys on AOL online.  So, I figured this would be a good excuse to update the ol’ blog machines.

Are you doing what you truly want to do?

I would say yes to this.  There’s a difference between what you plan on doing, and what you’re wanting to do right now.  So, at this moment in time, what I am doing is what I truly want.

Do you have a dream to follow?

I have a lot of dreams, some more realistic than others.  My bucket list consists of the following:

  • Get a Samoyed Dog
  • Go into Outer Space
  • Learn to play a musical instrument
  • Learn to Ski
  • Make a painting
  • Own a house with no HOA
  • Ride a horse
  • Run in a marathon
  • Speak another Language
  • Visit Japan, Australia, London
  • Work at a successful Silicon Valley Startup
  • Write a book
  • Get to Diamond in League of Legends
  • Be debt free.

I mean, dream implies something fanciful, but in order to follow it then I suppose it should be realistic.  A lot of my items are pretty realistic, some bordering on mundane.  Some of them are things I truly want to do, and some are things I feel like I “should” do.  I guess I should get rid of the latter, because what is imposing that on me in the first place?  One of the main dreams of my youth was to meet someone who would truly be an amazing partner and best friend in this life.  So, that one I have already accomplished and living every day.  I feel pretty lucky I can say that.  (Man I should really put more badass stuff on my Bucket List)

League of Legends is one of the most played games in the eSports arena.  It’s a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game that is inspired by DOTA, a Warcraft 3 Mod.  Most players are male, but there is still a good amount of girls interested in the game as well.  With this said, here’s a video that was released to introduce the “first” professional all-girl League of Legends team.  I have heard there was an all female team in China, so I am not sure how accurate the “first” part really is.  So, we shall start at the beginning, with this video:

My reactions to the video were a bit mixed.  As a League of Legends player myself none of the information they pointed out was a big surprise.  All of the championship games that I’ve watched were of teams that were all male, I already knew this.  There are, of course, a few exceptions that may have one girl on the team.  However, the biggest names that are in at the top competitive global level are typically all male.  The video claims that only 10% of the player base is female, but I am not sure how they collect that data.  There is no place in the game where I have entered my gender.  But, let’s take that statistic at face value.  This means that there’s a 9:1 chance of a LoL player being male.  Logically, it just makes sense that women would be the minority in all aspects of the game.  Since entries and trials are based on who has the skills and time to participate, I don’t feel as though any of this is a systemic issue of discrimination.

Gender was a huge focus of their marketing angle though.  Making history, breaking the glass, rising above the stereotypes.  This message can be empowering, polarizing or neutral.  Some might look at this and get excited for this team paving the way for them to enter this world.  Others might even be excited to try the game if they see other girls playing on this level.  Some people, however, will react in a negative way saying that they are somehow a gimmick.  And some, like me, just think it’s not very important information to the question at hand.  Are they Gosu?

Random dream time.  There was this store, it was a sporting good store.  For no reason I wanted to break into it & sleep in a display bed setup on a loft overnight.   I researched and saw reviews that some slacker guy was hardly ever there.  I got a hold of keys somehow, broke in, and slept overnight.  I didn’t steal or ruin anything.  My friend Lou was there the next day when I was leaving.  At this point I realized that I was pretending to be a guy as a clever disguise I suppose.  So Lou said “Let’s pretend to be a gay because this company is really homophobic”.  So that meant we just kind of ran around outside saying “We’re gay, and you guys are jerks”.

Fast forward to years later.  I was at a luncheon  then there was a news story about it where the reporter was talking about it like it was a grave crime.  “Two political activists  broke into a Champion Select Sports Store using the facilities over night.  They continued to display their affection for one another in a homosexual way.  This was all very disturbing to store owner so & so”.  So, fast forward.  I had done this, and now I’m at some work function that’s hosted at Champion Select Sports Store.  My co-workers were there which included real co-workers and fake ones.  John Krasinski and Miguel Ferrer were there.  Miguel was asking me to tell him what I know, and that if I didn’t he was going to blow the whistle on the whole thing.

It was very serious business.  I woke up very confused about whether I had broken into this place and nervous someone would find out & arrest me.

“We don’t think that depictions of the prophets are freedom of expression. We think it is an offense against our rights,” he said, adding, “The West has to understand the ideology of the people.”[source] ——————————–

Unfortunately this will never happen. America’s freedoms allow us to be as degenerate and hateful as we want. We celebrate free speech in this country by defending the rights of politicians and business owners to openly speak on their disgust of gay people, for example. Gay people in America have to sit there and listen to it, they also have to know there’s nothing they can do to stop the rhetoric.

We are being represented by the worst of our society. Those who are full of hate and prejudice that take it upon themselves to insult the prophet of those in another country. Many of those with hateful things to say believe in their own version of said prophet and believe their “truth” is at odds with another culture’s “truth”. We have two groups of people who believe they are speaking in facts, and this isn’t being treated as a difference of opinion.

What they need to understand is that we also make fun of Christianity here in America. We make fun of Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Atheism, etc. Fun/Comedy/Commentary are made at the expense of beliefs that people truly hold dear.

We’re global now though. The things we do and say as Americans are heard all over the globe. Do I defend the rights of someone to espouse their ideas? Of course I do. But do I condemn those that use this freedom to demonize others for their own cause? Of course. I’ve seen some kneejerk reactions that want to label everyone from Libya as a terrorist or “sub-human”. It’s ridiculous.  I’ve actually heard people defend racial profiling of Muslims in airports because it’s better to be safe than sorry.  Well, as someone of Irish descent I’m just glad no one is concerned about the IRA currently or I’d be in the same boat.

The fact that the loudest and the most vocally vitriolic towards Islam are those who have their own religious ideology is what throws me off the most.. How angry did the religious right in this country get at Sinead O’Conner for ripping up a picture of the pope. Sure, she was free to do that here, and people had to deal with it. But it stung. It hit right at home, where it hurt, for a lot of people who truly believe in Catholocism. Yet, some man who calls himself a Christian, will release a film that fundamentally attacks the humanity of Islam. And what? People are supposed to just respect that we’re America and our Free Speech is of global priority?

Accountability. This is what matters. People need to be accountable for the things that they say. If you truly are only as good as your weakest members then we’re all the KKK or terrorists. Where have our manners gone? Where is good sense, respect, logic and kindness? What can we do to show the world that we’re better than this. That our parents raised us not to be cruel bullies who tout our freedoms over the world, but instead that we are respectful and greatful for our neighbors who share this planet with us.

Will anyone stop and say “We’re sorry”? I sure am.

– definition of the word govern, pertinent items from the dictionary

I’ve never really looked up the word govern before.  It’s pretty vague, actually.  I suppose I knew it was vague because that’s why it’s so polarizing and changes with the wind.  In America, government is really just the embodiment of the will of the people.  Right and wrong is nothing more than what society is willing, or not yet ready to, accept.  It’s perhaps the single most subjective thing that could possibly exist.  Where does this morality really come from?  Without direction, people were lost.

So I found one of those old surveys that we all used to do in the AOL days.  I thought it was interesting.  Edith, really?  I hope that was a joke.  And Applebee’s doesn’t have Gyro’s anymore :( :( :(  Hey at least I was spot on with where I will be in 10 years and what I want to be when I grow up.
